The oil wiper packing can be used in compressors of a horizontal, vertical or angled design. The packing are exclusively applied in crosshead machines. STASSKOL offers beside the standard of oil wiper packing also the BOSS – Balanced Oil Sealing Solution.
This innovative scraper design is characterized by a high scraping efficiency and tightness that avoids direct oil passage and overflowing process gas from the intermediate distance piece. The BOSS was already registered for a patent.
The two main scrapers of the BOSS are combined with the help of a tension ring in a way that the sealing surfaces are axially tight in the wiper gland, which is intended for the main scrapers. The pre-scraper blocks the first oil flush and the remaining oil can securely be removed from the piston rod.
The standard oil wiper packing consists of two chambers, a sealing ring, and two oil wiper elements. The sealing ring and the oil wiper elements are designed in several parts and are held against the piston rod by a garter spring.
MODE OF OPERATION
Oil wiper packing prevents that the transfer of the lubrication oil from the crankcase via the piston rod to the distance piece. In order to do this, a very accurate manufacturing of the wiper edges is required.
BOSS - The two scraper rings of the main scrapers have scraping edges with a special geometry.
Two scraping edges per main wiper increase the scraping efficiency significantly. The special geometry of the angles ensures that the oil still adhering to the rod during the return stroke is scraped and returned back to the crankcase.

Efficient oil removal is guaranteed by generously dimensioned return grooves. Always use appropriate return grooves in both, packing and corresponding crankcase.
While mounting the oil wiper packing, recommended clearances must strictly be observed.
Because of the split design it is possible to carry out a change of sealing rings and oil wiper rings without disconnecting the piston rod from the cross head and piston. A change of the complete oil wiper packing is only possible by disconnecting the cross head and piston rod.
The use of a mounting sleeve or a mounting cone is required when installing new sealing rings and oil wiper elements. Make sure the sealing and wiper surfaces are undamaged and jamming of segments is prevented, the sealing components must be mounted in the appropriate order and direction also.
