Labyrinth seals are non-contact and therefore also wear-free shaft seals.
Due to the narrowing of the cross-section between the shaft and the labyrinth tooth, the flow is greatly accelerated and strongly swirled in the downstream labyrinth chamber with its large cross-section. This achieves a good pressure reduction with low leakage at the same time.
